Dreamhost drops the bomb

April 17th, 2008 · 6 Comments · Hosting

I’ve been blogging for almost ten years. May 1st 2008 would have been my 10 year blog anniversary. The full story will have to wait until another day since today I have more pressing things on my mind. Dreamhost have deleted almost ten years of blog posts.Dreamhost closed my account a few days ago, claiming I had posted a defamatory article. I’ll post the article at a later date to prove just how ridiculous their decision was. I’m confident my host, the fabulous and wonderful AN Hosting, will be more than happy for me to post the few paragraphs that Dreamhost found so offensive.Where have the ten years worth of blog posts gone? I have even been denied access to the backup files.Of course, I kept regular backups of my blog, using the backup functions within the Dreamhost control panel. It is only now that I discover just how useless those backups are. The files are corrupt and no amount of fiddling can prise the information I need from their messed up innards.Thankfully, any files I uploaded are backed up properly. I regularly took backups via FTP. But that doesn’t solve the problem of having no Wordpress database backup and it doesn’t solve the problem of ten years of blogging being flushed down the drain.Dreamhost could fix this problem if they wanted to. They could provide me with a recent and working copy of my database since I’m sure they still have a copy. I doubt a company like Dreamhost ever completely purges its backups, especially given the amount of time the servers seem to crash. But no, they steadfastly refuse to help. All of my emails, after the initial exchange when they first deleted my account a few days ago, are ignored.

The Web Archive may be able to help… http://web.archive.org/

Though when I check it for this domain, it appears an adult website used to own it

My blog and some other sites are hosted through DreamHost. This is disturbing news.

What jerks! This should serve as a warning to all other bloggers on that site.
